Anything off-road performance is high on the task list and my main priority for attending the SEMA Show. I found just what I was looking for with the Icon Vehicle Dynamics CDEV (Compression Damping Electronic Valve) automatic shock tuning system. Scott Spiva, an Icon Sales and Product Specialist, explains the dynamics of what the CDEV is and a little bit of how it works.
Icon Vehicle Dynamics advertises its Compression Damping Electronic Valve (CDEV) as not just a fancy phone app. The whole thing is powered by the Icon Intelligent Control (IIC) computer module. The secret sauce is the combined technology from the IIC and CDEV which allows for automatic, instantaneous adjustments to the shock’s damping. The result is the absolute best shock performance setting for any given situation.
Icon Vehicle Dynamics CDEV Allows For Automatic Shock Tuning
Spiva went on to explain that the IIC system would support up to eight shocks on a single vehicle. So that would be ideal for a coilover and bypass shock on each corner. The computer collects data from each shock over 1,000 times per second, processes the information, and delivers it back to the CDEV to make calculated adjustments. This constant automatic shock tuning provides optimized performance that is specifically tuned to the vehicle’s make and model. Further, the controlling application allows for custom input adjustments on the fly as well.

Icon’s Award-Winning Toyota Tundra Suspension Lift System
Icon Vehicle Dynamics has integrated the high-tech CDEV and IIC systems into all of its new suspension systems. We know that they have been in the suspension game for a long time now. Icon is well known in the off-road and overland scene for building high-performance suspension systems of both the mid- and long-travel genres. With a reputation for robust functional quality, you know they spend the time and investment to do it the right way.
Sometimes, for a vehicle owner, the right way is to build it out and up in stages. Icon’s new 6-inch Performance Suspension System for the 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra allows for just that. There are actually nine different pre-configured stages of suspension systems to meet just about any level of performance expectations and budget and can economically fit up to 37-inch tires. The Stage 8 and Stage 9 kits come equipped with the CDEV system.
It appears this methodology got noticed at the 2023 SEMA Show where Icon Vehicle Dynamics picked up SEMA’s Best New Off-Road/4-Wheel-Drive Product for 2024.
Icon Brings The Heat With Custom SEMA Truck Builds
Now that is already a lot to take in at just one SEMA Booth and the Icon team should be proud. There were also many very rad vehicles on display. It was hard to ignore the totally tricked-out Ford Super Duty that was ready to romp through the desert and equally equipped to handle towing duties thanks to the CDEV technology.
The even bigger story was the unveiling of the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4. We first heard about this story prior to the show and included a highlight in our 2023 SEMA Show Preview. Icon had posted the need for a stock and new condition vehicle to support an R&D project. A vehicle owner answered the call, but that is when things snowballed and turned into a full SEMA truck build.
The vehicle owner had not seen his truck since he delivered his brand-new truck to Icon. So we definitely wanted to be on hand when it was revealed.
We think it turned out awesome! Congratulations to the vehicle owner for going out on a limb. He is already out in the dirt having fun with his new truck. Looks like it paid off big time!
